I'm beginning to feel hopeful that the collective voice of people from around the world has to be taken seriously and that no longer the, "with us or you're a terrorist" thinking rules our actions or causes fear. Our better judgement is beginning to resurface as reactive revenge gives way to thinking.

Dismantling Democracy: What's Behind the Magic Trick of War? It’s like the magic trick in The Wizard of Oz, but this in a version written by Franz Kafka. The war hides the failures and crimes of the leaders and their friends. But behind the leaders and their friends are the real “men behind the screen.” And they’re not men at all - they’re non-living, non-breathing legal fictions which have claimed the rights of humans to seize control of democracies from one side of the Atlantic to the other.

Copied straight from This Modern World

Two sides can play that game

From (This Modern World) reader Mark Finch:

You no doubt know of Dan Burton, the perennial thorn in Bill Clinton's side who happens to be a member of the House of Representatives from Indiana

He has a poll on his web page at the moment , asking whether the reader supports or opposes attacking Iraq. A couple of days ago, those opposed led narrowly 53% to 47%. Today, all of a sudden, those in favor of war have 80% of the votes.

I suspect that a concentrated effort is being made by the pro-war forces to skew the results. For what it's worth, one can apparently cast a vote as many times as one wants. (Did someone say "unscientific?")

Do with that what you will.

Update: Burton's poll is now running solidly against the war.

The Transhumanists Transhumanists are biotech absolutists. They claim humans should not merely be allowed to metamorphose themselves through surgery, cybertechnology, and the like, but should have the right to control the destiny of their genes by means of progeny design and fabrication. This could include replacing natural chromosomes with artificial chromosomes, increasing or decreasing the number of chromosomes in offspring or clones, and even, in Hughes's words, "mixing species boundaries through transgenic technologies."

Searching for genes that explain our personalities The difficulty of the work isn't stopping others who anticipate the promise of a greater understanding of personality as well as psychopathology. Already, research has begun to blur the traditional line delineating personality and psychopathology as separate entities.
"All our concern about diagnosis based on symptoms might be off base," he says. Instead, psychopathology could be defined and diagnosed based on genes and their interaction with the environment to produce certain outcomes. This would allow clinicians to detect people at risk for a certain disorder and, perhaps, prevent symptoms from ever occurring by modifying a person's environment.
"Understanding the genes and their interactions will most certainly also help us understand environmental influences," says University of Illinois personality and social psychologist Ed Diener, PhD. "We will be able to see when the environment 'overrides' the genes and why. And we will be able to see how environmental variations interact with genetic variations."

Disturbance on Delta scares travelers Give someone a gun and some authority, mix with an airplane, and you'll find terrorism.
-- the man - who was not identified by officials but described by others on the plane as fortyish and disheveled - made inappropriate comments to a female passenger a few rows behind him.
Ok, I see, the man was disheveled and upset a woman. A lot of other people were considerably more upset after this...

The man was removed from his seat and walked up the aisle to first class, his arms behind his back, passengers said. There, some travelers were asked to move to other first-class seats to accommodate the marshals. The curtain was drawn.

Five minutes later, though, one of the marshals reappeared, standing at the front of coach class in a defensive posture, his gun out and pointed toward passengers at the back of the plane. He remained in that position for the rest of the flight.

I feel really safe now with armed air marshals
